  • Punta Jesús Maria. Two volcanoes rise up to form the island of Ometepe in the middle of enormous Lake Nicaragua. The bigger volcano forces the wind to wrap around it on either side, forming two opposing currents in the lake on the leeward side and pushing out a long strip of sand known as Punta Jesús Maria. The waves come in from every side, and the black volcanic sand is sprinkled with little seashells that are evidence that the lake was once a part of the ocean.
